OVER 1000 SUPPORTERS WALK FOR DOWN SYNDROME AWARENESS

Participants set off on the Down Syndrome Family Network's 2023 Buddy Walk from Nelson Mandela Park after an energetic warm-up with moko jumbies and music.

FRIDAY OCT 27, 2023: PORT OF SPAIN, TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO –  On Sunday 22 October, The Digicel Foundation joined over a thousand other supporters participating in Down Syndrome Family Network’s 11th Annual Buddy Walk and 5K.  The name ‘Buddy Walk’ promotes inclusion between friends of every ability, and the event aims to bring society together regardless of class, creed, race or ability.

Supporters gather for the 2023 Buddy Walk to raise awareness about Down Syndrome on Sunday 22 October 2023.

The Buddy Walk was first established in 1995 by the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS) to promote acceptance and inclusion of people with Down syndrome and to celebrate Down Syndrome Awareness Month in October. It has grown into one of the most anticipated events for the Down Syndrome community and other persons with disabilities, their families and friends.

As corporate advocates for persons with disabilities, the Digicel Foundation supported the cause with an investment of TT$16,000.  Over 90% of the funds raised from the Buddy Walk will go to the Down Syndrome Family Network, which provides parents or caregivers with the resources and support they need to help persons with Down Syndrome reach their full potential.  Amongst other initiatives, the Down Syndrome Family Network hosts free quarterly workshops and offers a work mentorship programme in Trinidad and Tobago.
