IGT BRINGS THE JOY OF STORYTELLING TO CHILDREN’S HOMES

Pre-schoolers enjoy an animated storytelling session with IGT employee Kari Ann Dookie at the Cotton Tree Foundation in St. Anns on October 25 2023.

WEDNESDAY, 8 NOVEMBER 2023: PORT OF SPAIN, TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO – Amica House, a safe home for socially displaced girls, recently enjoyed a special storytelling event led by International Game Technology (IGT) employees. This is the latest in a series of storytelling activities hosted by IGT for the beneficiaries of the technology company’s After School Advantage (ASA) programme.

IGT employee Raihaana Mohammed spreads the love of reading with children of Amica House on October 13, 2023.

“Raihaana Mohammed from IGT read the local storybook Petra and the Poui, which really sparked the children’s imagination,” said Marie-Louise Belmare Singh, Assistant to the Administrator at Amica House. “They loved hearing about Petra’s journey from Trinidad to Japan and her adventures with the Poui Tree and Japanese Cherry Blossom. Afterwards, the girls asked to have more stories and interactions like this one. We’ll read the story together again soon since we now have a copy in our home library. We can also do an online search for images of the trees on the computers in our ASA lab, courtesy of IGT, so the girls are able to keep learning.”

IGT employee Gabriel Nicholas reads a local folklore story about Papa Bois to youth beneficiaries of the Credo Foundation for Justice on August 28, 2023.

The ASA Programme is IGT’s flagship community initiative, devoted to providing youth with access to technology while promoting opportunities in digital learning centres in communities where IGT operates. Between 2011 and 2023, IGT Trinidad and Tobago has made over 50 donations to its 18 ASA Centres, providing state-of-the-art computers, online technology, software, and employee volunteer hours to partner organizations.

“The ASA programme extends beyond a donation of technology – it is a long term commitment between IGT, its employees and our respective NGO partners,” said Dexter W. Thomas, IGT General Manager, Trinidad and Tobago. “Over the years, our employees have volunteered their time and skills to establish and maintain each computer centre. They also go one step further, regularly planning activities for and engaging with the beneficiaries of each organisation. IGT employees’ volunteerism is the backbone of the programme’s success.”

IGT General Manager Dexter W. Thomas engages students at the Immortelle Centre for Special Needs in a storytelling activity on May 24, 2023.

So far this year, IGT employees have held storytelling sessions for Amica House, The Cotton Tree Foundation, The Just Because Foundation, The Credo Centre for Boys, Credo Sophia House for Girls, and Immortelle Centre for Special Needs. Storytelling joins an already long list of support initiatives and volunteerism activities held by IGT employees for ASA programme beneficiaries, which includes annual Easter and Christmas treat events, book and food drives and refreshing and painting of ASA computer centres.

On March 21, 2023, young patients attending the pediatric oncology clinic at Mt. Hope Hospital had an easier wait than usual as they participated in a virtual storytelling event led by IGT Country Manager Roger Bolai.
