FIRST CRAB FARM LAUNCHED IN TOBAGO

MONDAY 22 APRIL 2024, PORT OF SPAIN, TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO – Buccoo Historical Park on Orange Grove Road in Tobago is now home to a first-of-its-kind crab farm in the Caribbean. Launched by the Canaan Bon Accord Sports Club, the crab farm is an initiative to rear, process, package and sell blue crabs and crab meat. The farm was established with a TT$100,000 ‘Extraordinary Projects Impacting Communities’ (EPIC) Grant from the Digicel Foundation in partnership with Shell Trinidad and Tobago.

The concept of the Tobago Crab Farm is to rear crabs to maturity and standardise the size of crabs available for sale on the market, while preserving Tobago’s cultural heritage.  The Crab Farm consists of two 20 ft ponds. Pond A is filled with soil for the crabs to burrow and mate.  Pond B is located nearby and filled with swamp water so the female crabs can wash their eggs off and leave for hatching.

Minister of Sport and Community Development and MP for Tobago East the Honourable Shamfa Cudjoe and Assemblyman Nathisha Charles Pantin, Secretary for Food Security, Natural Resources the Environment and Sustainable Development, enjoy the performance by primary school children at the launch of the Canaan Bon Accord Crab Farm on April 12.

At the launch event on Friday 12 April 2024, Minister of Sport and Community Development and MP for Tobago West Shamfa Cudjoe-Lewis described the farm as a ‘legacy project’. The project, she said, is a clear example of people on the ground knowing what they want and developing their communities once given the right resources and support. The Canaan Bon Accord Sports Club is part of the Canaan Bon Accord Crown Point Committee for Sustainable Community Development, an initiative led by the Ministry of Sport and Community Development.

Assemblyman Nathisha Charles Pantin, THA Secretary for Food Security, Natural Resources, the Environment and Sustainable Development, shared her sentiments that this community initiative puts an important focus on food security and sustainability through protection and preservation.

The Digicel Foundation’s Head of Operations, Cindyann Currency, noted that “the EPIC programme was designed to empower organisations to mobilise partnerships and transform their community spaces. The Canaan Bon Accord Crab Farm is yet another example of what can be achieved when you match innovation with a passion for community.”  She also thanked Shell Trinidad and Tobago for co-financing this year’s EPIC programme, which she said has “not only provided vital financial support, but has also served as a beacon of encouragement throughout this process.”
